A showcase of art from the saddleworth group of artists
Janis Bowie moved to the area as a child, attended nearby schools and worked in local industry before qualifying as a teacher. After teaching design and Technology and Art at the local secondary school for 24 years she recently decided to concentrate on her painting.
18 years ago she joined the Saddleworth Group of Artists and exhibited with them as well as at other venues on a regular basis including the Millyard Gallery, Uppermill. Her subject matter includes landscapes as well as figures which she produces in pastel for finer detail and watercolour to create an impressionistic atmosphere.
A few years ago Janis produced a collection of paintings depicting textile Mill Interiors as she feels it will preserve the memory of an industry that once thrived in this area. As well as having a mill painting exhibited at the Mall Gallery in London, Gallery Oldham has recently purchased one for their permanent collection.
Recently she has used acrylic on canvas for bold, dramatic local landscapes using black and white as well as coloured paintings.
