About the Artist

Nancy Crilley

I have been creating contemporary stitched textiles since completing my degree in Embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University. Using drawing, print, paint, collage and free machine embroidery, I create images inspired by photographs, observations and sketches made in situ on my travels, or from memory and imagination, often using ideas collected over a long period of time.

Work often starts with a pencil drawing on paper. This is then translated into a stitched drawing on canvas or other surface to which paint, collage and further stitch are added.

At other times, the materials themselves can be my inspiration. No drawing is used and I paint or collage straight onto canvas or paper. Stitch is added as the work evolves leading to more imaginary abstract pieces. I get great satisfaction from using the sewing machine as a drawing implement.
